The central nervous system is the major control center of the body. It is made up of two important organs — the brain and the spinal cord. But there’s another important, but often ignored component of the nerve system, and that’s the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

What is Cerebrospinal Fluid?

Cerebrospinal fluid is a liquid that coats the brain and the spinal cord. It supplies nutrients to these organs and also serves as a cushion for the brain inside the skull. Medical research has shown that cerebrospinal fluid has a huge impact on your body’s physiology. What’s more? The flow of the cerebrospinal fluid is a vital component of the fluid itself.

At Foundation Chiropractic, we focus on Foundational Correction by removing shifts at the upper cervical spine (top of the neck), restoring normal structure, the circulation of CSF, and thus allowing the body to function optimally.

How is CSF Produced?

The cerebrospinal fluid is produced by the choroid plexus. The choroid plexus lies in the two ventricles. Your choroid plexus produces an average of 500ml of cerebrospinal fluid every day, and at any point in time, there’s around 150ml — 250ml of the fluid in your body.

What is the Importance of Cerebrospinal Fluid?

The CSF serves as a cushion for the brain and protects it from the damaging effects of the skull. The CSF provides a buoyancy effect that prevents the brain from deforming under its weight. The CSF also serves as an immunological barrier, protecting the brain, transferring nutrients, and flushing metabolic wastes.

Currently, several neurological disorders are now associated with cerebrospinal fluid flow. These include multiple sclerosispost-concussion syndrome, and migraines.

Another disorder is the Atlas Displacement Complex (ADC). It affects the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid and triggers several other health issues. In Atlas Displacement Complex, blood vessels in the neck and head are obstructed by the atlas vertebra, thus causing waste products to push upward and stay trapped. The waste then accumulates near the brain resulting in brain inflammation, toxicity, and other issues.

Impaired Flow of the Cerebrospinal Fluid

If the smooth flow of the cerebrospinal fluid is interrupted for any reason, then the exchange of wastes and nutrients in your body will be inhibited. Interruption of CSF flow can be caused by Foundational Shifts in the upper neck. Misalignments of the spine are usually caused by a sedentary lifestyle or traumatic injuries.

The human body produces a cup of cerebrospinal fluid everyday.

This fluid replaces the already absorbed fluid.

Interruption of CSF flow or excess production of CSF can cause it to buildup in the brain. The impairment of CSF transmission may result in the inhibition of neurotransmitters, with subsequent impairment of blood flow to the brain.

Foundational Correction Helps to Improve the Flow

The flow of the cerebrospinal fluid is usually affected by Foundational Shifts of the spine. These shifts must be addressed to prevent secondary conditions (symptoms).

Foundational Correction optimizes the flow of CSF and restores CSF flow and bodily function back to normal.
